Optimal Management Practices and Nitrogen Forms for Canola Cultivation in Wet Sandy Soils
MacGregor, MB|May 21, 2022
With sandy soils and a super wet year (most canola still not in ground around here) I wonder which management practice is the best? Broadcast vs sideband vs midrow? what form of nitrogen ? Could ESN be beneficial in a wet year? What’s the recommended safe rate in those scenarios?

ESN while encapsulated could have floated away in a wet scenario if not banded. SuperU would provide ample below ground protection in extremely wet environments.
Lots to unpack here.
Broadcast canola can work. If you broadcast urea would use an N stabilizer coated to reduce volatilization. Broadest seed, urea then barrow in.
ESN is safe at higher rates and would probably be the best bet. There could be some benefit to any of the nitrogen inhibitors if you can get it applied. Let me know if you want some more help with this and I can make a quote.
