Hello! I ask on behalf of a farmer friend who is considering to invest in a direct seeding machine and asked for an expert opinion. Any advice (pros, cons, alternatives) on this machine: https://www.vaderstad.com/uk/drilling/seed-hawk-air-seeders/seed-hawk-c

This spring was our first year with a seed hawk on our family farm and we had previously been using a flexicoil with paired row Dutch openers. The benefits of the precision knife for seed and fert placement, as well as depth control, packing pressure and sectional control are immediately worth it. Crops came up quick, even and thick in the row comparatively. However, 12” spacing will take some getting used to. Cons so far: We bought a used machine sport of last minute and so didn’t have much support dealer wise for setting up, working out kinks and asking questions which is on us for sure. Some of the electronic components and icon system while are user friendly and fairly straightforward did give us various small issues that were often challenging to solve. Overall these machines are designed well and their benefits are many but I’m not the one to ask about alternatives. Hope this was helpful!

I personally know the inventors of the Seed hawk placement system, now Vaderstad, and the key components are separation from seed to fertilizer. Good soil contact and decent residue clearance. This technology has been in long use in Canada and is a good machine.
