I have seen this work with cereal rye in southern Illinois. A word of caution would be to know exactly the value of the biomass you are removing. The neighbor I have that is having success with this has a significant amount of beef cattle as well as a turkey facility, giving him ample access to manure, cheaply replacing the lost nutrients.

I’m in central Missouri and have done this successfully with cereal rye in previous years, but have switched to triticale due to better feed value and harvesting options. In New York, I would suspect forage barley would work well.
