Achieving Optimal Soil Health: Lowering pH in Sulfur-Heavy Soil

My soil test shows high pH and also high sulfur levels. I know elemental sulfur will lower pH but with sulfur already in abundance what is the best way to go about lowering the pH in my soil?

I hate being that person BUT 1) how did this field get tested (depth and what parts of field) 2) could the lab have made a mistake (it has happened to me in the past I always question the lab when I see stuff like this) 3) I would retest and make sure it’s done correctly and I would do it personally vs an intern/assistant 4) go w a smaller particle sulfur blend w like gypsum
If there was an economic way to lower pH it would have been done awhile ago here in the RRV with plenty of 8 pH here. I don’t know if you could add enough S to drop it
An option to lower the pH is Humics, they are an amphoteric molecule thus making it possible to either release or gain the Hydrogen ion to balance pH.
A couple things:
- sulfur soil levels will not be evenly distributed across your fields; so even with a high test not all the field will be the same.
- I have been working with elemental sulfur for over 30 years and do not know of a situation where added sulfur caused an imbalance.
- imo you are ok to go with ES to address high pH soils.
Note: there is an abundance of calcium carbonate you should also see better soil floculation resulting in better water infiltration.
I would not hesitate application.
As to how much...more info needed.
